Serena Williams revenges Australian Open loss with stunning performance
The two top
American players in the WTA were in action today, the defending champion Serena
Williams was looking to revenge this year’s loss at the Australian Open against
Sloane Stephens.
Serena
started very strong on serve and only lost one point in the three first service
games, Sloane was struggling to hold serve and in the 6th game the
world number one got the first break of serve. Sloane was not finished yet and
pulled off two great games and leveled things up at 4 games all. When serving
at 4 – 5, Stephens wasn’t able to hold serve and Serena claimed the first set after
an unforced forehand error
Serena had to face break point in the
start of the second set, but was able to hold serve and she was the first to
get the break once again in this set in the 4th game to get a 3 – 1 lead.
This time Williams confirmed the break with a love hold of serve and after
another drop of serve by Stephens, the 2012 champion was serving to close the match.
Like in the first set, an unforced forehand error cost Stephens the set and
also the match
In the next
round Serena Williams will face the Carla Suarez Navarro, the Spanish pulled
off a great victory over Angelique Kerber in a third set tie break. About the
next match with Navarro, Serena said: “It will be a tough, but I hope you guys
come here and support me!”
In the men’s
competition the former number one Lleyton Hewitt continued his great
performance in New York, after defeating Juan Martin Del Potro in the last
round, the Australian won his match against Evgeny Donskoy in four sets.
Denis
Istomin and Andreas Seppi played the 4th consecutive match on a
Grand Slam event, in the last three matches a fifth set was needed to determine
the winner, this time the same has happened and was Istomin who got away with
the victory after more than 3 hours of play.
