Venus Williams played some of her best
career tennis this week with huge victories, but wasn’t able to overcome 2011 Wimbledon
champion Petra Kvitova.
This was a very fiery contest between two aggressive
players, the American started stronger getting an early break for a 2 – 0 lead,
but Williams wasn’t able to keep that advantage and with a double fault Kvitova
got the break back. After a couple holds of serve, Kvitova dropped her service
game once again after a backhand that went long. Both players held serve from
this point and Venus claimed the first set 6 – 3 with a return error from the
Czech.
Kvitova played solid tennis in the second
set not facing a single break point. A break in the fourth game was enough for
Kvitova to win this set and take the match into a third and decisive set.
The third set was once again all about the
serve. Venus had huge opportunity at game number 6 with two break points, but
lost them after two forehand errors, one into the net and the other long. The
game was decided in a tie break and Kvitova was just too strong getting a 6 – 0
lead. At match point number three Petra closed the match after another forehand
error from Williams.
