US Open Day 6 - Review

The day 6 of the US Open had some great comebacks and some surprises

Ana Ivanovic 4 – 6 7 – 5 6 – 4 Christina McHale
The former world number 1 Ana Ivanovic had to come back from one set and one break down against Christina McHale to get herself a place in the fourth round.
McHale started the game stronger with some quality shots and serves while Ivanovic was struggling to find her rhythm and after 51 minutes the American pulled off a 6 – 4 lead after a very close set.
The 21 years old from New Jersey kept her good level in the second set and had the opportunity to serve for the match at 5 – 4, but Ivanovic fought back and was able to turn this second set to 7 – 5.
In the third set both players served well with some quality game around the net but McHale couldn’t handle the pressure of serving to stay in the match at 4 – 5 and she was broken after a backhand unforced error  from the young American

Rafael Nadal 6 – 4 6 – 3 6 – 3 Ivan Dodig
Rafael Nadal knew this was going to be a difficult match against Ivan Dodig, the Croatian won the previous meeting in Montreal two years ago and the Spanish had to be at his best.
The 2010 champion kept his serve unbroken like he did in the two first rounds against Ryan Harrison and Rogerio Dutra Silva, and only allowed Dodig to win 48% of the points when the Croatian came to the net.
The Spanish proved to be too strong for Dodig and after two hours and 8 minutes with a service winner “El Toro” revenged Montreal’s defeat in straight sets

Camila Giorgi 4 – 6 6 – 4 6 – 3 Caroline Wozniacki
Former runner-up Caroline Wozniacki was surprised by the qualifier Camila Giorgi in three sets, the Danish played her best tennis this season in the United States and after taking the first set by 6 – 4 things seemed to be in control for Caroline. However Giorgi was hitting the ball very hard and was able to turn this match to her side. Wozniacki only got 13 winners while Giorgi made 46, despite 45 unforced errors the player from Macerata got a place in a 4th round Grand Slam like she had already did last year in Wimbedlon

Victoria Azarenka 6 – 7 6 – 3 6 – 2 Alize Cornet
The 2012 runner-up Victoria Azarenka faced a little scare against Alize Cornet, she lost the first set by 6 – 7 with a very poor performance, 5 double faults, only 5 winners and 20 unforced errors. In the second “Vika” found her tennis and also her best serve, since the first set the player from Belarus won all service games, and was able to come back from one set down to get a place in the 4th round where she will face Ana Ivanovic

Philipp Kohlschreiber 6 – 4 3 – 6 7 – 5 7 – 6 John Isner
John Isner lost last year in this stage of the competition with Philipp Kohlschreiber and was looking to avoid another loss against the German.  The American said he was feeling a little tired after so many matches this summer, but was ready to fight.
Kohlschreiber started with an early break in the first set and managed to keep that advantage to get the first set. Isner fought back in the second set with a great performance (16 winners and 5 unforced errors) to level things up.
The third and fourth sets were very close but Isner wasn’t able to play his best tennis in the big moments.  “Big John” lost his serve when serving at 5 – 6 in the third with a double fault and in the fourth he got a break to serve for the set at 6 – 5, but was broken and lost in the tie break.

Roger Federer 6 – 3 6 – 0 6 – 2 Adrian Mannarino

Roger Federer got another easy win in three sets against Adrian Mannarino in a match where the 5 times champion was just too strong for the French. In the next round Federer will play against Tommy Robredo.

In other women matches, the Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was crushed by Alison Riske by 6 - 3 6 - 0 while Roberta Vinci defeated her compatriot Karin Knapp in straight sets. Simona Halep keeps impressing and almost won against Maria Kirilenko with a double bagel. Daniela Hantuchova and Flavia Pennetta won their matches and are also in the next stage

In the men draw no big surprises, Tommy Robredo's experience proved to be decisive in his game against Daniel Evans winning in four sets and Janko Tipsarevic came frome one set down to win against Jack Sock. Milos Raonic, Richard Gasquet and David Ferrer were able to win their matches and they are all in the next round
