WTA Tokyo – Petra Kvitova reaches final after third set tie break victory over Venus Williams

Venus Williams played some of her best career tennis this week with huge victories, but wasn’t able to overcome 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

This was a very fiery contest between two aggressive players, the American started stronger getting an early break for a 2 – 0 lead, but Williams wasn’t able to keep that advantage and with a double fault Kvitova got the break back. After a couple holds of serve, Kvitova dropped her service game once again after a backhand that went long. Both players held serve from this point and Venus claimed the first set 6 – 3 with a return error from the Czech.
Kvitova played solid tennis in the second set not facing a single break point. A break in the fourth game was enough for Kvitova to win this set and take the match into a third and decisive set.

The third set was once again all about the serve. Venus had huge opportunity at game number 6 with two break points, but lost them after two forehand errors, one into the net and the other long. The game was decided in a tie break and Kvitova was just too strong getting a 6 – 0 lead. At match point number three Petra closed the match after another forehand error from Williams.
