Novak Djokovic too strong for João Sousa

Novak Djokovic too strong for João Sousa

The world number one Novak Djokovic reached the US Open 4th round after a three set victory over João Sousa. The Portuguese was playing his first third round in a major after two great victories over Grigor Dimitrov and Jarkko Nieminen, both in 5 sets. The first set was solved by a 6 – 0 for Djokovic, however Sousa had some opportunities with game points but couldn’t convert them. João produced some good tennis in the second set and with some return errors from Djokovic was able to get his first two games, but the Serbian closed this set strong with a break in the 8th game. In the third set Djokovic seemed to be cruising for another bagel with a 5 – 0 lead, but Sousa got a hold and won his first game on Djokovic’s serve. Novak closed the match with a love break of serve in the following game and will play in the next round against Marcel Granollers

Marcel Granollers reaches the 4th round in US Open and ends American hopes in men’s singles. The Spanish is the marathon men this year at New York with three five set victories with some great comebacks. He recovered from 1 – 2 down to take the match into a fifth set, and in the decider was also a break down, but managed to recover and on the 11th game got a decisive break that allowed him to win the match against Tim Smyczek.

The two times semi-finalist Mikhail Youzhny got a place in the next round after defeating Tommy Haas. The German felt some physical difficulties and produced very poor tennis with 31 winners and 58 unforced errors. The “Colonel” had a solid performance and took advantage of Haas’ mistakes to take this match in four sets and set a meeting in the 4th round against Lleyton Hewitt

Mikhail Youzhny 6 – 3 6 – 2 2 – 6 6 – 3 Tommy Haas
