Serena Williams claims 5th US Open career title after epic final

Despite Azarenka's come back from double break down on the second set, Serena Williams revalidate US Open title

Azarenka started on serve and was broken in her first service game after a great backhand crossed winner from Serena. The World No. 1 had a 30 – 0 lead to confirm the break, but with three unforced errors and an excellent return of serve from Vika, the Belarusian tied the game. Both players held serve, Serena was struggling with the windy conditions and Azarenka played extremely aggressive from the baseline.  At 4 – 4 things got mental, both players increased their game level and Azarenka showed some great skills turning defensive into offensive and pulling off some amazing winners to hold her serve and force Serena to serve to stay in the first set. Despite two double faults and a foot fault, Serena was able to hold serve after more than 9 minutes. The American found her best forehands to break her opponent and with a love hold of serve claimed the first set 7 – 5

Like in the first set, Azarenka was broken on her first service game. After another easy hold of serve, Vika finally won a game and reduced this second set to 1 – 2. Azarenka was confident to get the break back and had two opportunities for that, but Serena found her best serve to keep her serve. The Belarusian became frustrated and after three double faults gave Serena a double break lead.  Azarenka is a fighter and with improved her level and won two straight games. Both players held serve and Serena was now serving to win her 5th US Open, but Azarenka pulled off some outstanding returns and leveled this 2nd set at 5 games all. Vika was now trying to get ahead of the second serve for the first time, but Serena got the break and was serving for the championship for the second time. The defending champion started with an ace and was just three points away from the title, but Azarenka fought back once again and after a double fault this set would be decided in a tie break. Serena got a 3 – 1 lead, but the World No. 2 played her best tennis to put herself in front at 6 – 4 with two set points. Despite being able to save those chances, Azarenka claimed this second set on his third chance with 8 – 6 in the breaker.

The third set was all about Serena, Vika lost her serve at 1 – 2 with a double fault and since then the Belarusian wasn’t able to find herself in the match. After 2 hours and 45 minutes the World No.1 claimed her 5th US Open title in an epic final
